Keeping your dog safe on Independence Day

Keeping your dog safe on Independence Day

As we celebrate Independence Day on the Fourth of July, it’s important to remember that it can be an anxious and frightening time for our pets as our neighbourhoods fill with the sounds of fireworks and celebrations.

It’s important during this time that you prepare your dog to feel safe, secure and calm - and to ensure they are microchipped and tagged just in case they escape so they can be easily identified.

Independence Day tips for dogs:

  • Make sure you have a safe “den” for your dog to shelter in when they’re feeling stressed - and make sure it’s as far away from windows and doors to reduce the sound of fireworks. It’s also a good idea to muffle the sound of fireworks by having music playing or a fan on.
  • Ensure all of your doors, windows and gates are secure at all times - and that your guests are aware of that as well.
  • With more of the human treats like chocolate, grapes and alcohol around during the holiday period that are dangerous for dogs, take extra care to ensure your pet doesn’t have access to them.
  • Be careful to keep your dog away from fireworks in case they try to sniff or eat them as they contain toxic ingredients. It’s also important to be aware that their hair can easily catch fire if they get close to flames.
  • If your dog is extremely stressed talk to your vet about medication or natural remedies that can assist in keeping them calm.
  • Above all, while it’s important we all celebrate and enjoy what Independence Day means to us all, remember that the sound of fireworks is like never-ending thunder to our pets, so let’s take the time to prepare and comfort them during this time.
